Dr. Collins was born and raised in Ontario. He obtained a Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree with honors specialization in physiology at Western University. Subsequently, he completed his medical training at University College Cork in Ireland and residency in internal medicine at Baystate Medical Center, University of Massachusetts, USA. Dr. Collins then returned to Canada, where he completed residency training in gastroenterology at McMaster University. He was awarded the Dr. Hirsh Rastogi Award for exemplary care by a gastroenterology resident in his first year of training, followed by the McMaster University gastroenterology resident of the year award and was elected as chief resident for his final year of training in the gastroenterology program. Following the completion of the gastroenterology program, Dr. Collins completed a fellowship in advanced clinical hepatology at the University of Toronto with the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease. He was elected as chief hepatology fellow during his time with the program. Dr. Collins is currently practicing as a general hepatologist in Hamilton and maintains ties with McMaster University.
